BS 4142 noise assessments

BS 4142 is a British Standard used to rate and assess sound of an industrial or commercial nature, and how it may affect people living nearby. If it's been mentioned in your planning correspondence, here's what it means.

What BS 4142 is used for

The standard gives a method for comparing the sound from a specific source — such as plant, a heat pump, extraction equipment or a business operation — against the existing background sound at nearby homes.

It takes account of the character of the sound too, such as tones, impulses or intermittency, which can make a sound more noticeable.

When it comes up in planning

  • new or replacement plant and mechanical equipment;
  • commercial heat pumps and air conditioning;
  • commercial, industrial or business uses near homes;
  • conditions requiring noise from equipment to be controlled.

Is BS 4142 actually what you need?

Sometimes a council names BS 4142 specifically; sometimes it's assumed. Other standards and guidance may also be relevant depending on the project. A consultant can review the request and confirm the right approach.

Common questions

Does BS 4142 usually involve a site survey?

Often, because the assessment compares against existing background sound levels. The consultant will confirm what's required for your site.

Is BS 4142 the same as BS 8233?

No. BS 4142 deals with industrial and commercial sound affecting people nearby; BS 8233 gives guidance on noise levels inside buildings.

This page is general information, not professional acoustic or planning advice. An acoustic consultant can confirm what applies to your project.

Not sure whether BS 4142 is actually what your council requires?

Tell us what the council said. You don't need to know the standard yourself.
